Crack or Checking
Checking is a natural process that occurs in cedar logs as they dry and settle over time. As moisture escapes from the log, small cracks or splits, known as "checks," may appear on the surface. This is a normal and expected characteristic of log furniture and does not compromise the structural integrity or durability of the product. In fact, checking is a natural part of the aging process of cedar and adds to the rustic charm of each piece. Since we use larger logs, the checks are often more visible, but they do not affect the strength or longevity of the furniture. Cedar’s natural properties, including its resistance to rot and insects, remain intact despite the appearance of these small cracks.
Sometimes you can have small cracks or even large cracks. And these cracks come and go with the weather, but they do not hinder the strength of the log. These cracks will never go past the center of the log.
